Mr Gianluca Grasso, Owner of The Elio Grasso Estate

Elio Grasso is an Italian wine estate located near Monforte d’Alba, in Piedmont. It is particularly known for its single-vineyard Barolo cuvées.

The Elio Grasso portfolio has a range of other wines including a Langhe Nebbiolo, a Dolcetto d’Alba and a Barbera d’Alba. The estate also produces small amounts of a barrique-fermented Chardonnay, named Educato from one hectare (2.5 acres) plot.

Only estate-grown grapes are used, sourced from 18 ha (44.5 ac) of vineyards. Grasso’s flagship plots are located around the winery, and include a prime section of the Ginestra vineyard and just about all of the Gavarini vineyards on the ridge above the winery. Grasso also have more recent plantings in the Rüncot vineyard on the sunny slopes just below the winery’s terraced garden.

In the winery, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aging varies depending on the cuvée: the Riserva Rüncot matures in French oak barriques for two years, and then another two years in bottle, while the Gavarina Chiniera and Ginestra Casa Maté wines are aged in more traditional 2500-liter Slavonian oak barrels. Barrel cellars have been cut into the rock, which allows precise temperature regulation.

2017 Elio Grasso, Barolo Gavarini Chiniera

“Grasso’s 2017 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is fabulous. In fact, the Gavarini is easily one of the wines of the vintage because it retains all of its classic signatures, which is also the sign of a first-class vineyard. Bright and vibrant in the glass, the Gavarini pulses with energy. Crushed red flowers, mint, chalk, white pepper, cinnamon and orange peel give the 2017 a super-classic Nebbiolo profile, as expressed in a relatively high-altitude site. The precision and finesse of the tannins – so hard to find in 2017- elevates the Gavarini into the realm of the sublime.” – 96 points, Vinous

2017 Elio Grasso, Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate

The 2017 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a dark, mysterious wine. Black cherry, menthol, tobacco, licorice, spice, new leather and pine meld together in a super-classic expression of Ginestra. Deep, rich and enveloping, the 2017 is so impressive in the early going. Here, too, the finesse of the tannins is remarkable.” – 96 points, Vinous
